Pedro Resende – Chaperone
Pedro completed his Biology degree at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto in 2006. He started his career at Instituto de Patologia e Imunologia Molecular, Universidade do Porto. In 2007, he moved to the UK to work at Pfizer's European Headquarters for Research and Development. In 2008, Pedro moved to California, and did his PhD research on stem cell Biology at the Salk Institute in San Diego, and at UCLA. In 2013, Pedro came back to Portugal, and he is now a co-principal investigator at i3S, Porto, where he is studying how genetic alterations in adult stem cells can lead to the development of tumors.
In parallel with his research, Pedro co-founded two professional associations, experienced roles in policy advice, being one of the few researchers selected to participate as Deputy in the 1st edition of Health Parliament Portugal, and was invited by the Ministry of Health to be an external consultant for the area of Innovation in Health.
More recently, Pedro decided to enter the world of entrepreneurship, he co-founded and is the Director of Chaperone (www.chaperone.online), an online marketplace for career development in science.

Career management skills: why we need them and how to develop them.
From a personal perspective, the specific difficulties of managing scientific careers internationally and some statistical data on this situation will be presented.
The speaker will also address the different areas of career management (supervision, mentoring, information, advice, counseling and coaching), what characterizes each of them and how we should take advantage of them.
